Typically a consultation will only take 30 to 40 minutes, we'll discuss your symptoms and address any concerns you may have. You may require some diagnostic tests to be carried such as an ECG, ultrasound examination of your heart or an exercise test. These tests will be performed at the clinic during your consultation to provide you with a one-stop service. If you require these additional tests the consultation make take up to an hour.
In most cases, once the decision has been made in consultation with your GP or other referring doctor to seek advice or treatment from a cardiologist at Newcastle Cardiovascular Clinic, patients or GPs can ring or e-mail to make an appointment.
It is not necessary to have a GP letter specifically if you are a self-funding patient and are interested in our cardiovascular screening appointment. You can make your appointment by telephone or e-mail.
Patients can help us deliver the best possible care by following a few simple guidelines
- It is very important that your cardiologist knows what medications you currently use. The safest way to be sure we have the correct information is to bring your most recent repeat prescription.
- It would be helpful to bring along information regarding previous heart treatment and investigations. This may be in the form of correspondence you have received from hospitals or CDs of angiogram procedures.
Cancellation of Appointments
If you are unable to attend your appointment it is in your own interests to ring and make another time without delay. That way we can also make the vacated appointment available to another patient.
Please be aware that a cancellation fee may be applicable for non-attendance without calling to cancel the appointment.

Some cardiac conditions can be managed with lifestyle changes and medication. In other cases you may require key-hole surgical procedures which are performed in a hospital setting. If you require any special scans such as an MRI or CT scan this will be arranged for you at the hospital.
If you have private medical insurance we would request that you contact your insurer to ensure your policy covers you for your initial consultation and subsequent investigations. Your insurer will give you an authorisation code that you will need to bring to your consultation. Drs Edwards and Das are registered with all major private health insurers.
Patients without medical insurance who wish to see a cardiologist privately are welcome. A full list of charges is available on the website for self-funding patients.
